Site Condition Monitoring

The nationally agreed standard recording form and guidance notes for the Condition Monitoring of Local Geological Sites.

Documents:

Site Designation Proforma

There is no ‘official’ form for the recording of the details of a designated Local Geological Site.  A specimen LGS proforma is given here, but several similar forms exist and any of them may be adapted to suit local circumstances.   A completed version of this form (Landpark Quarry) is also provided to give some idea of how it works in practice.

Soils

These documents give a basic introduction to the surveying of soils.  They are aimed at trained or amateur geologists with little or no current expertise in describing soils.  They were developed for the use of county geoconservation groups, to enable them to make a preliminary survey of local soils, with the hope that some sites may be able to be included in Local Geological Site designations.  However, any novice using these documents is advised to seek expert advice before using their data for such purposes.

Documents:

Quaternary Deposits

These documents give a basic introduction to the surveying of Quaternary deposits in England.  They are aimed at trained or amateur geologists with little or no current expertise in this area.  They were developed for the use of county geoconservation groups, to enable them to make a preliminary identification of local Quaternary deposits.

However, any novice using these documents is advised to seek expert advice before using their data as part any site designation or publication.

Site Management Plan Template

A detailed template and guidance notes for the writing of site management plans at local geological sites.  This template takes an holistic approach to site management – it does not only outline the geological interests but requires the consideration of all related interests at the site (archaeology, biodiversity, recreational, etc.).  It is expected that the template will be used for sites with potential for development or enhancement, and be used to seek funding or to promote the site to landowners or the community.
